The essentials of this note
- Odoo 20 lets you create, edit and archive records offline and sync them later.
- It helps field service, site, warehouse and route sales teams.
- Before using it, define roles, permissions and how to resolve simultaneous changes.
- It is worth testing on a copy with the team’s real workflows.
One of the new features of Odoo 20 is offline mode: according to the official release notes, it lets you create, edit and archive records without an internet connection and sync them when the signal returns.
For many companies it is a practical change. Work on sites, in warehouses or on the road no longer depends on connectivity, and information reaches the system without going through paper or intermediate spreadsheets.
Which teams it makes sense for
Field service and maintenance
Technicians who visit customers or plants and need to record tasks, materials and notes on site.
Sites and field projects
Teams at locations with poor signal reporting progress, consumption or inspections.
Warehouses and logistics
Areas with low coverage, where people write on paper today and enter it later.
Route sales
Sales reps who visit customers and need to look up data or record orders even if the connection fails.
What changes day to day
Records are entered at the moment, not at the end of the day. That reduces double entry and transcription errors.
Syncing later brings the information into Odoo so that administration, purchasing or planning can see it without waiting for someone to get back to the office.
What to prepare before using it
- Define which roles will work offline and with which apps and records.
- Review each user’s permissions: what they cannot see online should not be available offline either.
- Test on the real devices the team will use and in the places where the signal drops.
- Agree on how to resolve cases where two people change the same record.
- Train the team on when syncing happens and how to check that the information arrived.
What to validate
The release notes describe the feature in general. Before planning a rollout, it is worth confirming on a test copy which apps and operations it covers in your case and how it behaves with your custom developments.
That is why we include it in the assessment of every upgrade to Odoo 20: we test the field team’s workflows before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to upgrade to Odoo 20 to use it?
Yes. Offline mode is new in version 20.
Does it work in every app?
It is worth checking for each case. We test it on a test copy with your team’s real workflows.
What happens if two people change the same record?
That is one of the points to define before rollout: who has priority and how changes are reviewed.
Is it useful for my current field team?
If they record on paper or in spreadsheets that someone enters later, it is a good candidate. We assess it during the review.
